From the founder of Sticky Monkey Labels
As a mom of three boys and the founder of Sticky Monkey Labels, summer is our busiest season — because it's when families have the most activities running simultaneously and the highest volume of gear moving in and out of the house every day. A labeling system set up before summer starts pays back every single week.
Summer sounds relaxing until you're managing day camp Monday through Wednesday, daycare Thursday and Friday, a family vacation in week three, and sports practice three evenings a week. Each activity generates its own gear requirements, its own lost-item risks, and its own labeling needs. The family that sets up the right system before June runs a smoother summer than the one scrambling to find the swim bag at 7:45am.
Here's the complete summer labeling system — organized by activity type, with the right label for each surface, and the inventory checklist that makes sure nothing leaves the house unlabeled.
Why Summer Specifically Requires a Labeling System
During the school year, your child goes to one place with one set of supplies on a predictable daily schedule. Summer changes everything: multiple destinations, irregular schedules, shared spaces with other children, outdoor activities that expose gear to weather and water, and the general chaos of a less structured routine. More contexts mean more opportunities for things to go missing.
The statistics back this up — summer is when the highest volume of labeled items are ordered, because it's when parents who didn't label during the school year discover the consequences. A labeled item in a camp lost-and-found bin gets returned. An unlabeled one typically doesn't.
Three things that make summer labeling different from school-year labeling:
- More items need labeling. Camp requires clothing, sleeping bags, towels, shoes, and gear that school doesn't. Each additional item is an additional lost-item risk.
- Labels face tougher conditions. Outdoor play, pool and lake water, sunscreen exposure, and higher wash frequency all demand more durable adhesion than standard school use.
- Multiple settings require different label types. A waterproof label that works on a water bottle won't perform on a sleeping bag. Getting the right label on the right surface is what makes the system hold through a full summer.
"I LOVE these labels!!! They stay on even after several washes and the wax pencil stays on all day — even at daycare. These are amazing and oh so cute!"

The Summer Labeling System — By Activity
Day Camp
Day camp gear cycles in and out every day — water bottles, lunch, clothing changes, sunscreen, towels. In a group of twenty or thirty children, unlabeled similar items disappear daily.
Labels to use: Waterproof name labels on all hard surfaces (water bottle, lunchbox, sunscreen). Stick-on clothing labels on all fabric items including spare outfits. Shoe labels on every pair going to camp.
Sleepaway Camp
The full labeling challenge — everything for a week or more, going through communal laundry, outdoor activities, shared cabin storage, and pool/lake exposure. Every single item needs a label.
Labels to use: Our Camp Label Pack covers the full kit — 85+ labels including clothing labels (choose iron-on or stick-on at checkout), waterproof labels for all gear and hard surfaces, three pairs of shoe labels, and a contact label. The most complete single-order solution for sleepaway camp.
Summer Daycare
For younger children in daycare through the summer, the daily labeling requirements continue — bottles need daily date and contents, all clothing needs names, bags need labels inside and out.
Labels to use: Write-on baby bottle labels for daily bottle labeling. Daycare Label Pack (106 labels) for comprehensive coverage of all daycare items.
Family Vacation & Travel
Travel introduces shared spaces — pools, beaches, hotel rooms, busy tourist locations — where identical-looking gear from multiple families creates genuine mix-up risk. A labeled water bottle at a busy beach is identifiable. An unlabeled one isn't.
Labels to use: Waterproof name labels on luggage tags, water bottles, sunscreen, and personal items. Contact labels inside bags with your phone number — critical if luggage goes astray. Waterproof labels on children's gear that goes to pools and beaches.
Summer Sports & Activities
Summer sports camps and leagues generate their own gear requirements — uniforms, equipment bags, cleats, helmets, and water bottles that cycle through shared changing rooms and team environments weekly.
Labels to use: Waterproof name labels on helmets, equipment, and water bottles. Iron-on or stick-on labels on uniforms and jerseys. Shoe labels on all sports footwear. Browse our sport-specific iron-on labels for designs that match your child's sport.
"The seller is so helpful with choosing the correct label for our type of bottles. These make life so much easier when preparing bottles for daycare each day! They go through the dishwasher and the sterilizer perfectly!"

Five Tips for a Summer Labeling Session That Actually Holds
- Do it all in one session. Block an hour before summer starts, get everything out, and label it all at once. Reactive labeling — after something goes missing — is less effective than proactive labeling before the first day of camp.
- Involve your child in the design choice. A child who chose the design on their label recognizes their belongings instantly and is more motivated to bring them home. With over 100 designs available, most children have a clear preference.
- Clean surfaces before applying waterproof labels. Wipe hard surfaces with isopropyl alcohol first to remove invisible residue. Allow 24 hours before the first wash or water exposure for best adhesion.
- Label both inside and outside of bags. External label for quick identification. Internal contact label as the backup if the external label gets damaged.
- Check labels mid-summer. A quick scan of frequently used items around the halfway point — do labels still need replacing on high-wear items? — takes five minutes and prevents losses in the second half of summer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What labels do I need for summer?
The core summer labeling kit: waterproof name labels for all hard surfaces (water bottles, lunchboxes, gear), clothing labels (stick-on or iron-on) for all fabric items, shoe labels for all footwear, and write-on labels for daily-update items like baby bottles and food containers. For sleepaway camp specifically, our Camp Label Pack covers everything in one order.
When should I order summer labels?
At least two weeks before summer activities begin — ideally three, to allow time for the labeling session itself and the 24-hour adhesive setting period before items go to camp or daycare for the first time. For sleepaway camp, order when you register rather than when camp is approaching.
Will labels survive pool and outdoor conditions?
Our waterproof labels are specifically designed to be weatherproof — they hold through pool and lake water, sunscreen exposure, outdoor conditions, and the general rough handling of summer activity. Apply to a clean dry surface and allow 24 hours before first water exposure. Standard top-rack dishwasher cycles are fine for water bottles and containers throughout the summer.
Can I split a label pack across multiple children for summer?
Yes — any pack can be split across multiple children's names at no extra charge. Type "Split" in the name field at checkout and list names in the Special Request field. You can also specify a color per child for designs that offer color options, making each child's gear instantly distinguishable by color across the whole summer.
